Gate Risk Assessment

Gate risk assessment for architects, procurement, specifiers, schools, construction companies, housing developments and property management companies.

Online Barriers is offering a Risk Assessment Service that is based on achieving British Standards relevant to powered gates. Architects, specifiers, property management companies, local councils, schools and other government departments can request this service. Some sites are at greater risk than others. Schools, social and private housing complexes are areas were gate safety are very important . Our compliance tests, identify what safety measures might be required; in the case of existing powered/automatic gates, the assessment can help users to review the adequacy of current safety measures. This is important in view of recent accidents involving powered sliding gates and bifolding gates, some of which have been fatal.

No two automatic gates are the same and should be assessed on their own merits. The Online Barriers risk assessment includes force testing to ensure the gate, either sliding or swing are within the required forces.

Those responsible for new installations or maintaining powered electric gates, may not be aware that powered sliding gates are classified as 'machinery' and must therefore be CE marked by the manufacturer in accordance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, and there is a risk assessment standard that is harmonised to the Machinery Directive, namely EN ISO 14121, Safety of machinery.

If any areas of concern are highlighted, Online Barriers are able to provide quotations to fit safety devices such as, safety buffers, safety induction loops, runback area protection, warning signs, warning lights, detailed gate safety instructions, routine servicing and gate safety checks . Given the potential for gates to cause fatal injuries - such as children playing in the vicinity of the gates - unsafe gates should have any necessary additional safety measures implemented as soon as reasonably practicable. If appropriate, automated operation could be temporarily disabled, until permanent safety equipment have been installed, tested, and re-assessed.

Online Barriers Risk Assessments are available, please email gates@onlinebarriers.com or telephone 08443 577 910 (local rate) to arrange an appointment.
